Image
processing solutions. Digital color cameras with image post
processing hardware can be easily integrated in
customized chassis. Both of these components are
already embedded in several high speed scanner.
This camera solution can be the heart of a
fast OCR reader and pattern recognition solution.
Color digital cameras.
Processing and transmitting
the color images is a time-consuming matter. For fast processing and
easy access to the captured data, a special compression logic and
hardware was designed to be part of the camera, which allows the
captured data to keep pace with high-speed scanners and transports. To
enable fast and cost-efficient color image acquisition, BAPis delivers
high-speed electronic parts of the cameras for up to DINA3 documents.
The cameras are based on a fast CCD linear sensor, which permits
acquisition of up to 500ppm and a resolution of up to 1000dpi. The
cameras also deliver a grayscale image simultaneously, without any speed
degradation. Additionally, the highly specialized cameras possess
certain intelligence, which simplifies further image processing (color
filtering, color correction). Main advantage of the BAPis cameras is
customization. BAPis delivers, for special kinds of transport system,
the optical part of the camera too. In this case each camera has
complicated optical parts with a unique light system, which make this
product easy to use in variable paper transport systems.
The cameras are designed in cooperation with the image processing
module. The tasks are performed partially in the camera and partially in
the image processing module, based on the DSP and FPGA, to have a
greater advantage, for an improved logical division of tasks resulting
in increased processing speed.
Image Engine based on TMS32C6414 DSP (IE64)
Image Engine has been constructed to support image processing for color
cameras. Main goal of IE64 is to fulfill all image processing functions
as image acquisition, rotation, compression and delivery to the host
system. This is the latest state of the art solution at the most
advantageous price point per color image, available on the market.
The IE64 module has been developed and produced in series on the basis
of the DSP and FPGA. This module, an embedded board, has two camera
inputs and can acquire four images simultaneously. The image
processing software rotates, snippets, binarizes and compresses the
received images and sends them through USB to the host. This module has
standardized USB interfaces, which enable interfacing to widely
differing computer architectures and operating systems.
The variety of image processing algorithms has been developed for IE64.
The newest one is JPEG2000 based on DSP, FPGA and ASIC approach.
IE64 optionally compress JPEG2000 images through special controller to
reach high throughput (IE64-HS). In this case up to 500ipm DIN A4/200dpi
can be JPEG2000 compressed.
The version of the IE64 board has additional Ethernet 1Gbps interface
and support IP/UDP network protocol (IE64-J2K-GbE). In this case the
speed with the host system can be accelerated two times.
Color scanners.
The high-speed color cameras
and Image Processing Board IE64 are placed in different paper transport
systems. The DIN A6 product is the perfect solution for check
processing, where the performance and speed of paper are the most
important aims. The scanner with MICR, OCR-A/B, endorser and sorter
delivers color images up to 1000ipm with 200dpi. This is a cutting edge
technology solution for high speed color processing. The DIN A4 scanner
is able to scan letter format paper sheets with 120dpm with 200dpi color
images. The transport system is suitable for different forms of
application forms, for example with glued photo and is able to scan
different sizes of paper in one scan batch. This scanner was specially
custom designed for ID cards, passport and postal input application.
File converter K2M with JPEG2000 for medical applications.
BAPis has developed different algorithms for
image processing based on DSP, so that the different image processing
functions can be realized in very short time (for example de-skewing,
pre-emphasis filter, JPEG2000). The newest algorithm for the JPEG2000
compression is approved from Texas Instruments through a special test
method. This algorithm enables in the medical domain a much better
compression of X-ray as the method, which is used at this time.
Our optimized JPEG2000 algorithm can be used for color and grayscale
pictures. This algorithm enables us to compress the pictures a few times
deeper and to abbreviate the otherwise very long compression time.
Further BAPis integrates the JPEG2000 algorithm in a file converter box.
This converter enables the repeated reduction of the already available
files in the archiving system. The costs for the file transmission can
be reduced, because of the small file size, by transfusing the files,
for example through internet. This converter box translates BMP, JPEG,
DICOM and CR2 files into JPEG2000 format. Lossy and lossless JPEG2000 process
has been implemented in the K2M and can be used in teleradiology and
medical modalities. It is a stand-alone device, which will be connected
to the host with USB2.0. The compression time depends on the picture
size. The converter can reduce the file size up to 70%, in comparison to
the standard JPEG compression, whereas the picture quality is always
still higher as in JPEG format.
The K2M box includes also PDF and PDF/A output format as single and
multi-page.
Image processing Library IPLBV.
To use function calls in host only, without any hardware parts,
BAPis has developed the DLL with all necessary functions for image
processing. IPLBV includes among other things: de-skewing, saturation,
compression and decompression (JPEG, JPEG2000, Group IV), adaptive
binarization, OCR A/B and barcode recognition. This library is speed and
quality optimized and can be used on each MS Windows/XP system. |
